Junckers SUSTAINABILITY

Our vision
A collab with nature

MAKING NATURE OUR PARTNER - NOT A RESOURCE

Every product has an environmental impact and leaves a footprint on the planet, including wooden floors. We understand the responsibility that comes with our business, and we know, if we are to leave nature healthier for the next generations, there will always be work to be done. Enduring quality is a big part of our DNA, but product quality alone is not enough. We need to reduce our impact through several activities in order to reduce the footprint we leave on our world. We are therefore on a journey to collab with nature to ensure that we have, and are, a business in the future.

How we work with nature

01

Design

Wood is a natural material with significant environmental benefits when used responsibly. We create timeless, high-quality hardwood floors designed to last. Wood stores CO₂, supporting climate goals, while our design allows floors to be disassembled, relocated or reconfigured as needs change.

02

Sourcing

We insist on responsible sourcing. All our wood comes from sustainably managed forests, where forest resources are carefully regenerated.

03

Production

Our logs come from certified, managed forests and would often otherwise be used for firewood, energy or paper. We turn the best part of each log into durable hardwood flooring. Surplus wood becomes certified biomass energy for our factory and the local grid.

04

Quality

A Junckers floor can last for decades, often well beyond 50 years. A long lifespan means less frequent replacement, longer carbon storage and less demand for new materials.

05

Partnerships

We build partnerships to address challenges and drive sustainable progress. We believe we can achieve more together.

FLOOR FOR EVERY PROJECT

For commercial, residential, sports projects and public buildings, there is a sustainable Junckers flooring solution for every project. For new buildings as well as ideal for upgrading existing buildings with an environmentally sound flooring option, Junckers offers a choice of versatile installation methods for refurbishments, including levelling batten systems which allow screeds to be omitted, popular for listed buildings and heritage projects.

Junckers floors are also recommended for projects which are built for disassembly as they are easy to lift and reuse. Many a Junckers floor takes on a new lease of life when re-fitted as a reclaimed floor. A sand and seal will bring an old floor right back to pristine condition, ready for use for many more years.

JUNCKERS VALUE CHAIN

Assessing climate and environmental impacts is part of how we develop our floors. The need for documented environmental information pushes, inspires, and questions us, whether we are rethinking production methods, making use of by-products, supporting the timber industry, or expanding our product documentation.

Making efficient use of timber resources has been part of our approach since 1930. This is how we make use of them now.

UN Global compact
Sustainable Development Goals

PEOPLE AND THE PLANET ARE AT THE FOREFRONT OF OUR MINDS

In 2011 Junckers joined the UN Global Compact to show our commitment to a sustainable future

When the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set in 2015, it was a natural progression for us to use the goals as a framework to inspire and guide us in the development of our business. Based on our industry and business model, we focus on four of the SDG goals - Good health and wellbeing; Industry, innovation and infrastructure; Responsible consumption and production; and Life on land.

SUSTAINABILITY CASE STUDY: FROM WASTE WOOD TO UN GLOBAL WORLD BENCH

Presenting the Global Goals Bench – created to highlight United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 Goals, which were formally adopted by world leaders in 2015, are set out in a large, circular bench - one section for each goal.

During the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen, Realdania, a philanthropic association working to improve quality of life through the built environment, installed the bench and accompanying planters outside its offices to promote and highlight the important messages that form part of the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Junckers collaborated with TagTomat, an urban gardening company with a focus on upcycling and a more circular economy, to create the bench and planters. Junckers provided wood waste from its production line, which was upcycled into a beautiful and useful structure, where the public is invited to talk about common goals and to continue the dialogue to help the world to a better, more sustainable future.
